Learning More About Your VA Benefits

Updated: Sep 22, 2022

You have served your country well, but do you know enough about your Veterans Administration benefits and how they can assist you in your retirement years? At iNavigate Senior Living Solutions, we have worked with countless older adults and their family members who are unsure about their VA benefits and how those benefits apply to senior living. Here is what you need to know.

The Aid and Attendance VA Benefits

Veterans throughout the state of Texas may be able to take advantage of the Aid and Attendance Pension benefit. Veterans and their surviving spouses could be eligible to receive assistance in offsetting the costs of care specific to ADLs, or activities of daily living.

Activities of daily living are common tasks like eating, dressing, showering, toileting, etc. It is common for older adults with complex medical conditions, pain, or mobility concerns to benefit from some additional hands-on assistance with ADL tasks. You can find this assistance by hiring a home care agency to visit you at home, or in your independent living apartment, or by living in a senior care community.

VA Benefits for Senior Living Communities

Eligible Veterans can receive money monthly to offset the costs of living in a senior care community, like assisted living. While specific benefits vary by person and situation, you could receive approximately $1,800 per month to put toward your assisted living costs. Surviving spouses can receive more than $1,200 per month while couples who live together in a senior living community can receive an estimated $2,200 per month. Benefits are based on need and are given on a sliding scale.

You do not have to live in a VA community in order to take advantage of the Aid and Attendance Benefit. Fortunately, you have a choice when it comes to which senior care community you feel fits your situation best.

Determining Your Eligibility

If you aren’t sure if you are eligible for the Aid and Attendance Benefit, begin by visiting the Texas Veterans Portal or by calling your local VA office. The team at iNavigate Senior Living Solutions is also experienced with connecting Veterans to senior communities best suited for their preferences, medical history, and financial situation.
